Session Descriptions
AFO’s Within the College of Pedorthics of Canada
Graham Archer, C. Ped Tech (C), C. Ped (C)
Admittedly, the stance from the College of Pedorthics of Canada has historically been quite ‘grey’ and a few years ago the CPC worked to clarify how it stands in regards to AFO’s. This PAC AFO event provides the CPC an opportunity to communicate directly with its members about how AFO’s fit in a C. Ped (C)’s scope and how we can dispense the devices ethically.
The mandate of the College of Pedorthics of Canada is to protect the public. The CPC requires all its members and potential members to achieve a base level of knowledge and pedorthic experience, and to maintain a level of ongoing training and education. A Canadian certified pedorthist must show competence in all levels of professional practice and must be able to present this competence to a panel of their peers should questions about their abilities arise.[hr toTop=”false” /]
Identifying Opportunities for Custom AFO Utilization
Don Pierson, CO, C.Ped
Do you currently provide custom AFOs to your patients? Are you comfortable deciding which type of AFP may provide the most benefit to your patients? This session will provide the opportunity to see a wide selection of custom AFOs, learn about the most common indications for which a custom AFO would be appropriate treatment, and the particular styles/components that may prove to be most effective.
The Arizona AFO line of products does include a few new styles for which you may yet be unfamiliar such as the AZ Mezzo, the AZ Breeze and the MBB. Many styles of both gauntlet and thermoplastic AFOs will be available for you to examine.
We will also address casting methods, fitting and footwear selection.[hr toTop=”false” /]
Casting Workshop for AFOs
Laura Harper, C. Ped (C)
This session will feature a review of a AFO plaster of Paris and STS sock casting methods, as well as an opportunity for delegates to practice each approach.[hr toTop=”false” /]
The CFO-AFO Continuum – When to Use Which
Laura Harper, C. Ped (C)
Explanation of indications and contraindications for CFO and AFO use with reference to relevant injury management.[hr toTop=”false” /]
The Vast Array of AFO Designs and Patient Presentations: When to Refer?
Jesse Cornell, CPO(c), C. Ped Tech (C), C. Ped (C)
This session will focus on several AFO treatments, the pathology and the outcomes of the treatment. Every AFO treatment comes with risk/benefits and it is challenging to determine the most appropriate AFO as clinical presentation varies drastically although similarities in pathology exist. Knowing when to refer is paramount to the safety of Canadians and in a litigious world this is your best option for your respected practice.[hr toTop=”false” /]
